UK PM declines to Return India’s Kohinoor

On his visit to India, UK PM David Cameron denied to return the Kohinoor diamond when he was asked for it. The appeal to return the diamond was made by Gautam Sengupta who is the Director General of Archaeological Survey of India. The precious diamond was taken to Britain during the British rule in India when India was under its dominance.

Declining the demand for the precious diamond, Cameron said, “I certainly don’t believe in returnism.” He also referred to a law which prevents British government from returning the items.

Kohinoor was certainly one of pride elements of India. After being taken to Britain, it was seen in the coronation crown of Queen Alexandra. Now, it is in a museum of Britain.

Will UK PM’s One Soft Statement Heal India’s Wounds of Jallianwala massacre?

David Cameron, UK’S Prime minister visited the Jallianwala massacre site and called the whole tragedy deeply shameful. The tragedy which killed hundreds of unarmed men and women including children locked inside a public park can’t even be healed or forgotten with an apology. However, the ironical part is that apology was never made. There was much hype about David Cameron’s visit to India and hope of his apologies for the incident, but in vain. India only heard from his mouth, “We must never forget what happened here.”

This statement comes as an act to woo the Sikh community for voting him. However, the response of the people to his statement has worked more towards reopening the past wounds rather than healing it.

On being criticized for not making a full apology, the PM said that it would not be correct to “reach back into history and seek out things you can apologize for.”
